Service Description

The Introduction to Western Saddle Fitting course provides a foundational understanding of how to properly evaluate, fit, and adjust Western saddles to ensure comfort, performance, and long-term soundness for the horse. Taught by experienced instructors from the North American Saddlery School, this course blends theory with practical application to give students a clear, systematic approach to saddle fitting. Students will learn the fundamental anatomy of the horse as it relates to saddle fit, including key skeletal and muscular structures that influence saddle placement and weight distribution. The course explores Western saddle components—such as trees, bars, rigging, skirts, and padding—and explains how their design and construction affect fit and function. Emphasis is placed on recognizing common saddle fit problems, understanding their causes, and identifying signs of discomfort or soreness in the horse. Through hands-on demonstrations and guided evaluation techniques, students will practice assessing saddle fit both on and off the horse. Topics include tree size and shape, bar angle and length, rock and twist, proper saddle placement, and the role of pads and shims. The course also introduces basic fitting considerations for different disciplines, horse conformations, and stages of training. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Understand core principles of Western saddle fit Identify key horse conformation factors that impact saddle fit Evaluate Western saddles for correct tree and bar fit Recognize and troubleshoot common saddle fit issues Communicate effectively with horse owners, riders, and trainers about fit solutions This course is ideal for aspiring saddlers, equine professionals, tack shop employees, trainers, and horse owners who want to develop informed, practical skills in Western saddle fitting. No prior experience is required.
